Description

Wasing Place is a house designed by J. Hobcraft, built between 1770 and 1773. The building was internally rebuilt and slightly altered after a fire. The south front features grey brick headers, stone quoins, and window dressings, with plat bands at the cill levels. A large triangular pediment crowns the center five bays, complete with stone coping and a circular window in the tympanum, along with a parapet that has stone coping. The roof is made of modern stainless steel and includes four stacks. This Palladian house has wings that are set back on both the right and left, reduced from two stories to one. It has two stories and an attic, with five bays and an additional one-bay wing to the left and a three-bay wing to the right, all featuring glazing bar sashes. The central entrance consists of two half-glazed doors with an architrave and a plain rectangular fanlight, framed by a semi-circular ashlar porch that has two steps and is supported by two Doric columns and pilasters. This porch also features an entablature with a fluted frieze, paterae, and a dentil cornice.

The north front mirrors the south front but is constructed of brown brick and has a circular window in the tympanum of the pediment, adorned with carved swags on either side. There are 13 steps with iron railings leading to a central doorway that has been blocked and converted into a window, which features a moulded architrave and scrolled brackets supporting a segmental pediment. The wings on this side also have Venetian windows. The interior has been extensively rebuilt but includes some re-used materials from Pendarpes Hall in Cornwall.
