Description
Nos 1 to 8 Market Place are almshouses founded by John Estbury in 1502 and rebuilt by Henry Hippisley in 1852, with the architect being T. Talbot Bury. The building is arranged around a square courtyard and is constructed of brick with a stone tile roof, standing two storeys high. A timber arcade surrounds the paved courtyard, which features a well at its center. The entrance is marked by a picturesque, unsymmetrical tower that rises three storeys and has diaper brickwork with a battlemented parapet. The building also includes stone mullioned windows and an arched entrance with a stone band above, which bears an inscription.
