Description
House. Dating primarily from the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century. The house is two storeys high and divided into two distinct parts. The left side is constructed of flint with brick dressings, while the right side is of vitreous brick with red dressings. A notable feature of the right side is that the window surrounds extend vertically downwards to create decorative panels; a string course runs along the first floor, and a brick cornice is bracketed. The roof is tiled, with a gable on the left and a hipped return on the right. A large chimney is situated at the junction between the return and the main building. The left side has irregular stone mullioned windows and a central ledged door. The gable end is tile-hung. The right side has five bays, the second from the right being blocked, and the right ground floor window altered and widened. All windows have stone key blocks and 18th-century sash windows with three-centred arched heads; the upper windows are set in rectangular openings. It has been noted that these windows were reportedly brought from a house in Wantage. A modern central ledged door is present. The north-west front has five bays, two of which contain mullioned and transomed leaded windows, while the others are blocked.
