Description
The East Gateway and Gates to Elstree School, built around 1858 and likely designed by John Johnson, is a gateway and gates constructed in red brick with stone dressings in a Baroque style. The structure features a large semi-circular arch with stone impost blocks and a keystone, which displays a coat of arms above in an inverted arch. This arch is flanked by a giant order of fluted Doric pilasters that include a plinth, a full entablature, and ball finials. On either side of the central arch, there are two small archways with rusticated piers on the outside, topped with cornices, ball finials, and large scrolled buttresses that rise above the central arch. The central arch contains a pair of large wrought iron gates with dog rails that curve up to form top rails, along with smaller gates in the side arches.
