Description

The Southampton Civic Centre, constructed between 1928 and 1939, was designed by E Berry Webber following an architectural competition. It comprises a quadrangle of buildings with their principal facades facing outwards, incorporating the Law Courts to the west, the Municipal Offices to the south, the Guildhall to the east, and the Art Block to the north. All the buildings exhibit symmetrical compositions and are generally Classical in style, faced in Portland stone.

The Law Courts are distinguished by a hall with an arched recess containing the entrance, flanked by nine-bay, two-storeyed wings. A tall, gently tapering tower rises behind the entrance, featuring a clock, an open bell stage, and a low pyramidal roof. The Municipal Offices feature a pedimented centrepiece with the City's Arms above a tall arched recess housing the entrance. Lower, two-storeyed wings, linked by transverse administration blocks forming a shallow courtyard, flank the centrepiece. The transverse blocks have six-bay facades.

The Guildhall incorporates a large gabled public assembly hall, with refreshment rooms on either side, and a lower, flat-roofed entrance hall with a hexastyle Ionic portico. Wings to the left and right create a courtyard. The Art Block, originally intended for the Art Gallery and School of Art, later included the Central Library. The central entrance leads to the Art Gallery on the first floor, while porches on the courtyard’s left and right sides provide access to the Library and the School of Art, respectively. This block shares a similar composition of a centrepiece with flanking wings and side blocks, forming a courtyard. The interior has not been inspected.
