Description

This gas lamp standard, dating from around 1821-1822, is made of cast iron and features a square-section panelled pedestal. The column is designed to resemble a bundle of reeds tied with rope. The ladder-rest and lantern were replaced in the 20th century. It has been reconverted to gas from electricity. This lamp standard was originally part of a gas lighting system for Southampton, which was donated by W. Chamberlayne, a Member of Parliament.
