Description

The Dutch House is a house built between 1909 and 1910 by R.M. McDonald Lucas. It features roughcast brick with red tile dressings and a red clay patent tile roof adorned with shaped gables and pierced ridge tiles. The building has tall roughcast lateral stacks with coved cornices.

The house is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-bay southwest front with shaped gables. The smaller gable on the right has a tapered pier at the corner, a coved cornice, a recess with a round arch made of tiles-on-edge, and a two-storey canted bay window with small panes. The larger shaped gable on the left has a smaller projecting gabled bay featuring a Venetian window with tile arches and small-pane sashes, along with narrow sashes on the sides of the bay. The northwest side includes tapered lateral stacks with coved cornices, a porch with a modillion cornice and an asymmetrical arch, and a canted bay also with a modillion cornice. The southeast side has lateral stacks, one with tile weathered set-offs and small lancets topped with tile round arches. The rear has staggered gables with various sash windows that include glazing bars.

The interior of the house is largely intact. The front right room features a coved ceiling, tall dado panelling, and an inglenook with a rusticated elliptical arch. There are additional chimneypieces on the first floor, panelled doors, modillion cornices, and a staircase with stick balusters, inlaid newels, and moulded handrails.

The Dutch House was built alongside No. 124 Highfield Lane as the first two houses on The Portswood Estate. It was designed to set a standard for the houses that would follow in this 'Garden City' estate, where each house has its own garden backing onto a communal garden at the center.
