Description

A terrace of five houses, now forming a single commercial premise with a restaurant, bar, and flats, was built between 1860 and 1862. It was altered significantly in the mid-20th century and designed by T.E. Owen. The building is stuccoed with a Welsh slate hipped roof, featuring a rendered brick stack to the right of numbers 38-41, and a brick stack to the left and right of number 42.

The exterior is three storeys high with a basement and attic, arranged over nine bays (1:2:2:2:1:1). The design is symmetrical, with the ground floors rusticated and flanking bays projecting, each with a facing gable. Stone steps lead to a 20th-century two-leaf glazed door and fanlight, recessed within a single-storey projecting porch at the left of numbers 38 and 41 and to the right of numbers 39 and 40. These porches have round-arched openings and an entablature with a triglyph frieze, except for number 40, which lacks a cornice, and number 41, which has a plain, flat stuccoed arch. A 20th-century six-pane shop front casement is located to the right of numbers 38 and 41, and to the left of number 39, with a 12-pane casement towards number 39, and an infill shop front set between the porches of numbers 40 and 41, all under flat arches. An iron balcony with a metal tent roof supported by iron brackets is positioned above the recessed front, with separate balconies for numbers 38 and 42. The first floor of number 38 has a 12-pane sash, and the far right of number 42, a 10-pane sash. Elsewhere on the first floor, there are two 12-pane sashes to the left and four mid-20th century two-leaf French casements and one 10-pane sash to the right, all set under flat stuccoed arches. Numbers 39-41 have a dentilled eaves cornice with brackets. A sillband at the second floor contains eight sashes, four 6-pane and two 4-pane, each beneath a flat stuccoed arch with flanking pilasters. Number 42 has a tripartite window. The attic has a 4-light casement on number 38 and a round-headed casement with a moulded architrave on number 42, each set within a facing gable. The return on the right side of number 42 resembles numbers 38 and 39, with a similar projecting porch, door, and fanlight, and three sashes on each of the first and second floors.
