Description

A terrace of three houses located at St Jude’s Close, Southsea, built around 1858 by T.E. Owen. The houses are constructed of red brick in stretcher bond and have Welsh slated roofs. A brick stack with an oversailing brick cap is positioned to the left of No.1 and to the right of No.2.

The houses are two storeys with a basement and attic, arranged in a seven-bay facade (1/3/3). No.1 St Jude's Close has a projecting wing with a facing gable and rusticated stone quoins. It features a tripartite stone transomed and mullioned bay window on the ground floor with two three-pane front casements and single three-pane flanking casements, topped with a hipped roof. Above sits a stone transomed and mullioned window with an eared stone architrave, two lights wide, with three-pane casements. The attic window is set within the gable and has a similar one-light wide casement.

To the right, the recessed facade of No.2 St Jude's Close has a central two-storey porch with a jettied timber frame at the first floor, incorporating herringbone brick panels, and a facing gable with trefoil pierced bargeboards. The recessed boarded front door has ornamental strap hinges and sits under a stone shouldered arch with stone rusticated jambs; two flat timber lintels support the projecting first floor. A narrow one-light wide stone transomed window with an eared architrave and three-pane casement sits above the door. To the left and right of the porch at ground and first floor levels are similar two-light wide stone framed windows with casements. Dormer attic windows flank the porch, each with a three-pane casement set under a triangular stone arch, facing gable with projecting verge and bargeboards.

No.3 St Jude's Close, with a projecting wing and facing gable and rusticated stone quoins, features a boarded door set under a stone pointed arch. To the left and right of the doorway, and on the first floor, are matching two-light wide stone framed windows with three-pane casements. A one-light wide casement is above the doorway. Similar dormer attic windows are present. Note stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
