Description

The Halifax Building Society is a building society located on Commercial Road in Landport, Portsmouth, constructed around 1900 to 1920. It is designed in the Baroque style, featuring a combination of Portland stone and granite, with a concealed roof. The structure has three storeys and five bays.

The ground floor is made of polished granite and is defined by horizontal rusticated piers. On both the left and right sides, there is an eight-panelled door flanked by banded pilasters, with heavy brackets supporting a cornice and a bowed stone parapet above. The central section features three large recessed casement windows, with a frieze and cornice running across them.

On the first floor, there are five recessed sash windows, each with an architrave and keystone. The windows alternate between scrolled open and triangular pediments, all set within heavy horizontal banded rustication that includes an egg-and-dart band at the heads of the windows.

The second floor has rusticated outer bays with flanking Doric pilasters, while the central bay is flanked by Doric attached columns. It contains five sash windows, with the central three framed by Doric columns, a frieze, and a cornice. The outer sash windows are each set in a Gibbs surround with a keystone and cornice above. The building is topped with an entablature featuring a modillion cornice and a parapet with balusters, which are divided by piers. The interior has not been inspected.
