Description
Olney Bridge is an 18th-century river bridge that was widened in 1975. It features rusticated ashlar stonework, with ashlar used for the parapets and arch soffits. The parapets are made of concrete, faced with ashlar and capped. The bridge has five arches, with the three central arches being segmental and adorned with rusticated voussoirs and masonry. The central arch is flanked by rusticated pilasters that rise from small cutwaters and extend above the string course at road level, tapering to stone coping. The abutments at the ends of the three central arches have three-sided projecting embrasures. The outer arches are smaller and semi-circular. At each end of the bridge, there is approximately 30 feet of walling that curves outward. The 1975 widening involved doubling the bridge's width and restoring the ashlar facings.
