Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church constructed of coursed limestone, featuring a lead roof over the aisles and a tiled roof over the nave and chancel. It dates from the 13th and 14th centuries but was largely rebuilt between 1848 and 1849 by architect William Butterfield. The church includes an embattled west tower, nave, aisles, south porch, chancel, and vestry, all designed in the Decorated style with traceried windows. The south porch, clerestory, and vestry were added by Butterfield.
Inside, the nave consists of four bays with arcading in the style of the 14th century. The roof is arch-braced, also by Butterfield. There is a tall 13th-century tower arch and a 14th-century chancel arch. The chancel, originally from the 13th century, has been rebuilt and features low arcading on each side, which includes sedilia and a piscina. The ceiling in the chancel is decorated, a work by Butterfield. Notable fittings include a late 17th-century carved and fielded marquetry panelled octagonal pulpit, which was originally from St. Dunstan in the West.
