Description
Nos 57 to 79 (odd) and Nos 58 to 80 (even) on Spencer Street, built between 1853 and 1861, are the remaining structures of three streets known as Railway Cottages. These cottage terraces face each other and were originally accompanied by service roads at the rear. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick, featuring red brick quoins, string courses, and cambered arches above the doors and windows. They have slate roofs with moderately projecting eaves and stand two stories tall, with three-story end blocks topped with hipped roofs. Each unit typically has two windows, which are sashes with glazing bars, except for No 74, which has casements. The doors are plain and paired, with some being partly glazed. Large cruciform plan brick chimneys are prominent on the rooftops. The cottages are included in the listing primarily for their sociological interest.
