Description
The Medway Hospital laundry water tower, built around 1900, is a Grade II listed structure. It is constructed of brick and features a lead pyramidal roof with a square plan. The tower has a battered design and a plain crow-stepped gable at the entrance, which is defined by eight round-arched recessed panels. Above this, there is an overhanging brick tank adorned with false machicolations and gabled half dormers, leading to a sloping roof that culminates in a central octagonal truncated chimney. The ground floor includes segmental-arched openings, with a central doorway flanked by windows that have metal frames, and an oculus above. This water tower and chimney are notable for their unified design and are part of a former military hospital that included wards and a clock tower, although those structures are not included in this listing. The water tower is recognized for its landmark value and architectural interest, while the flanking laundry buildings are not considered of special interest.
