Description
The building is a stable, now used as offices, dating from around 1737. It is constructed of brick with glazed headers and features a hipped slate roof. The structure has a rectangular single-depth plan with east stables and a cart shed at the center and west end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a window range of three: two: three: four. It is divided into four uneven sections by firebreak parapets and includes an eaves cornice. The wide central segmental arched openings contain boarded double doors, while the openings have segmental arches. There are three doorways in the left-hand sections, 8/8-pane sash windows, and some 20th-century casements. An inserted vehicle entrance is located three bays from the right, with three flat-headed 20th-century casements above, and a doorway to the left with an 8-pane overlight.
Inside, the ground-floor stable retains its original upper floor, featuring ceiling joists notched over a cogged tie beam, and has a later stall division, with offices above. The building has group value with the north stables opposite.
Additionally, attached to the southwest corner is a buttress and a length of early 18th-century coped brick wall, which connects to the north end of The Guard House. Historically, this stable was used for the officers and as a coach house for the Commissioner, making it an important part of the notably complete Georgian dockyard.
