Description
The stables, located on the north range of Chatham Dockyard, date back to around 1737. They are constructed from brick with glazed headers and feature a hipped slate roof. The building has a rectangular single-depth plan, with the stables situated at the eastern end.
The exterior consists of two storeys and has a three-by-two window arrangement. It is divided into two sections by firebreak parapets and includes an eaves cornice. The building has flat-headed double doorways, with the right-hand one serving as a stable door, located in the middle and right-hand side of the left section. There is also a segmental-arched vehicle entrance on the left side of the right section, along with segmental-arched ground-floor 6/6 pane sash windows.
Inside, the stables retain original match board partitions in the grooms' rooms above, featuring half-glazed panelled doors and cast-iron grates with 18th-century surrounds. The ground-floor stables have later stall divisions, along with a cart shed and a hayloft above. The stables have group value with the southern stables located opposite.
Additionally, a section of the former perimeter wall connects with the southern stables. Historically, this perimeter wall extended north to connect with the South Tower House. The stables were used for housing officers' horses and as a coach house for the Commissioner, making them an important part of the notably complete Georgian dockyard.
