Description

Grench Manor is a house that has been extended and is now a retirement home. It dates from the mid to late 17th century, with later extensions added to the left and rear in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a tiled cross-gabled roof with ridge and gable stacks.

The house has two storeys and an attic, with a six-window range. Originally, it had a symmetrical five-window front, but a right-hand one-window range was added, which is marked by a straight joint and features a modillion eaves cornice. The late 19th-century ashlar porch has stilted segmental-arched doorways on the front and sides, supported by pilasters, and includes a six-panel door with small lancet windows on the sides. The windows are fitted with rubbed brick flat arches and 2/2-pane horned sashes in flush frames, along with three hipped dormers that have 3/3-pane sashes.

The left-hand projecting gable features plat bands, a full-height canted bay with keyed cambered casements, and an overhanging timber-framed attic gable supported by carved brackets. The right-hand end, also from the late 19th century, has raised ends to the coped gable and segmental-arched casements. Behind this is a mid-20th-century single-storey extension with a parapet. The rear of the building has two parallel ranges with varied window styles, including a large first-floor east-facing 10/10-pane sash in an exposed frame.

Inside, the interior has been altered in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. The large entrance hall features a rear marble fire surround with an eared architrave and shell moulding, along with a late 19th-century staircase. The right-hand room has 19th-century panelling, a fire surround, and a late 18th-century six-panel door. On the first floor, there is an early 19th-century marble fireplace with pilasters and paterae, as well as a plain pilastered fireplace from the 19th century. The late 19th-century wing includes an Adam-style fireplace with a swag and a central panel featuring an urn.
