Description
The two World War I sentry posts are concrete shelters designed for one or two people, standing approximately 2.5 meters high and featuring an 11-sided polygonal shape with a shallow domed roof. They may have originally had metal sheet linings on the interior, as seen in other examples, with the southern post showing some evidence of this in fragmentary remains and stains on the concrete, although it is largely unlined. The northern post was not inspected internally. Access to both posts is from the east through a small, heavy hatch-doorway equipped with a steel bar-handle and external hinges. Each post has five observation apertures on alternate sides, which could also serve as small arms embrasures, likely intended for handguns due to the restricted interior space, making rifle use impractical. The walls are about 30 centimeters (1 foot) thick and constructed in sections using poured concrete, with information from the Ministry of Defence indicating that the walls were poured in approximately 60-centimeter (2-foot) sections. The roofs were made using corrugated formers, with the corrugations visible on the inside. These sentry posts were designed as points of refuge under fire rather than for permanent occupation.
