Description
The memorial to French prisoners of war, located approximately 25 metres south of the Church of St George in Gillingham, was built in 1869. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and constructed from polychromatic limestone, red sandstone ashlar, granite, and marble.
The memorial features a stepped base leading to a square plinth with inscribed sides and a weathered top. Above this is an aedicule that includes a polychrome round arch with a pointed arched hood, set within a steep gable adorned with iron finials on foliate capitals and marble columns. A spirelet, finished with limestone and granite bands, culminates in a finial. Inside the memorial is a figure of a Napoleonic sailor.
This memorial commemorates French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars who died in prison hulks in Britain, particularly those buried on St Mary's Island, which is part of the former Dockyard. It is part of a complete early 20th-century naval barracks complex that includes the Captain's House, mess block, barracks on Pasley Road, and ancillary buildings.
