Description

Crimea House at Fort Pitt Grammar School for Girls is a former barracks hospital block dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of English bond gault brick with a Welsh slate roof and stands two storeys tall. The building features a six-window pedimented center flanked by five-window wings, with the center and paired end bays slightly advanced.

The central section has two tripartite plate-glass sash windows and a blocked round-headed arch on the ground floor. The first floor includes three horned plate glass sashes from around 1900 on the left and three 18-pane sashes, possibly from the early 19th century, on the right, with the central window under a cambered brick arch that was designed for a larger window now blocked. A stone dentil shallow pediment adorns the center.

The recessed flanking bays each have three 12-pane sashes in reveals on both floors, with one converted into a door. The advanced side bays feature two ground floor 12-pane sashes, while the first floor has similar sashes on the left and 18-pane sashes on the right, all in reveals and under flat window arches. The building is topped with a dentil eaves cornice and has a stepped stone terrace with the footings of a former verandah. There are three ridge stacks.

This building was used as a hospital during the Crimean War, which is reflected in its name, and it was visited by Queen Victoria.
