Description
No. 5 New Road Avenue is a house that has been extended and is now used as an office. It was built in the early 19th century, with later extensions added to each side in the late 19th century and a new roof added in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of yellow brick with stone dressings, featuring side lateral stacks and a mansard slate roof, reflecting a late Georgian style.
The house has a double-depth plan with flanking extensions and stands two storeys high, with a basement and attic. The symmetrical front has a 1:3:1-bay arrangement, with openings in three full-height recesses beneath a thin string course and a deep moulded parapet coping. Decorative stone panels are positioned above the strings in each bay. The porch features columns supporting an entablature and canopy, a rectangular overlight with a radial metal fanlight, and a six-panel door. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes, and there are three late 20th-century round-arched dormers. The outer single-storey blocks have four-light canted bays and dentil cornices at the parapet.
At the rear, there are shallow canted bays on each side, with steps leading up to the middle, which is flanked by wrought-iron railings. Inside, there is an entrance lobby and a through passage that includes a central stair with stick balusters and a curtail, divided by segmental arches. To the left, there is a lobby with a shallow plaster vault, and the doorways feature reeded architraves with corner rosettes and six-panel doors.
