Description

This is a terrace of five houses, likely originally six, dating from around 1800 on New Road, Rochester. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond gault brick, with Welsh slate roofs. They have a double-depth plan, with each house being three storeys high and having a basement, each with three bays. The ground floors have two 12-pane sashes, the first floors have three 12-pane sashes, and the second floors have six-pane sashes, all with glazing bars set within flat, rubbed brick sashes. The ground floor openings are articulated with three segmental, rubbed brick arches, the openings are recessed within and flanked by pilasters with moulded imposts. Number 18 retains its original six-panel raised and fielded architrave. Number 14 has a wooden porch dating from around 1820, featuring paired pilasters, a six-panel raised and fielded door, enclosed panelled returns, a cornice, and a flat roof that was removed during a renovation. Number 15 retains its original door architrave and overlight, complete with lamp compartment projections, though the door itself is a replacement from around 1930. Number 16 has a restored architrave and door. A two-bay block at the east end was rebuilt in matching brick detailing and may have originally been an independent house. Numbers 14 and 16 project slightly forward from the common building line. All houses feature a painted stone cornice and parapet. Party wall stacks are present. The rear elevations have five storeys and feature sashed windows. The interior remains uninspected.
