Description
Little Jane’s is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage, originally a two-bay end-chimney stack building, that has been altered and extended in the 20th century. A date of 1547 is inscribed on the building. It is constructed of random rubble with red brick quoins and dressings, and has a half-hipped thatched roof. The cottage is one storey with attics, containing two windows. These windows have 19th-century casements with leaded lights set within original wooden mullioned surrounds. A wooden door surround frames a plank door. A thatched porch, built around 1920 and supported on rustic timbers, is situated to one side. A 20th-century painted brick extension with a thatched roof projects from the right-hand side, while a circa 1912 painted brick lean-to with a tiled roof extends from the left-hand side.
The interior features an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wooden bressumer featuring stop-chamfered stops, and chamfered joists with run-out stops. There are also iron hooks for ascending the chimney. The spine beam, displaying stops in two places, indicates the ground floor originally comprised two rooms. A staircase, dating to the 18th century, is of a winder design and the roof features staggered purlins, chamfered with run-out stops at the ends. The cottage was the home of Jane Squibb, known as "Little Jane," who died of consumption at the age of 15 and was later memorialised for her piety in "Annals of the Poor" by the Reverend Legh Richmond, Curate of Brading between 1797 and 1805.
