Description

This building on High Street, Brading, is a restaurant that was formerly an inn. The front was rebuilt in the early 19th century, around 1814, but it incorporates a structure dating back to the late 17th or early 18th century. The front is stuccoed and features grooved detailing designed to resemble brickwork, set upon a stone rubble base. The roof is tiled with brick chimney stacks at each end and one centrally. The building has two storeys and four windows. The first floor features three 19th-century three-light wooden casement windows and a single-pane window. A doorcase with a wooden, pedimented hood supported by brackets shelters a half-glazed wooden door. To the right of the door is a rectangular window. A square, mid-19th century sash window, originally part of a door surround, is situated to the left, bearing horns and an open pedimented surround with floral moulding. Wooden brackets and reeded pilasters add detail. The original layout included a deep plinth. Inside, the ground floor contains two stone fireplaces with wooden bressumers, and a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops.
