Description
Great Appleford is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. It is constructed of stone rubble with red brick window dressings and features a modern tiled roof with three brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and four windows, with triple 19th-century casements. The left side has a doorcase with a hood moulding and a late 18th or early 19th-century six flush panelled door, while the right side has a mid-19th-century four panelled door. The rear elevation includes one blocked 17th-century mullioned window. Inside, there is an inglenook fireplace with a wooden bressumer and a chamfered spine beam.
Additionally, there is a two-storey 19th-century stone rubble link block with a slate roof and a wood and slate verandah that leads to a formerly detached early 18th-century brewhouse. The brewhouse is also two storeys, made of stone rubble with a slate roof, and features mullioned windows in tooled surrounds with keystones. Inside the brewhouse, there are chamfered beams with lambs tongue stops and a cambered brick fireplace flanked by two coppers. Great Appleford is noted as one of the original Domesday manors.
