Description
Thornton Cottage is an early 19th-century rustic cottage designed in a T plan and built over two storeys. The first floor is in a semi-attic style, featuring a combination of rendered and rubble walls with yellow brick dressings. The cottage has hipped gables adorned with ornamental bargeboards and a tiled roof, with four Jacobean-style chimney stacks grouped to the south and two to the north. The eaves extend down to the ground floor on the south side and over the ground floor next to the gabled bay, creating a porch supported by rustic wood columns.
The first floor below the gables is jettied, with a timber frame applied. The windows include three-light casements on the first floor and four-light casements on the ground floor, both with glazing bars. The garden front features a central gabled bay flanked by single-storey projecting gabled bays, with the southern bay incorporated into the main roof's southern pitch. The first floor has a five-light casement in the centre and two-light casements in the flanking bays. The centre of the ground floor projects with a lean-to roof.
