Description
The remains of a Direction Finding (D/F) tower at Ventnor Y-station date from around 1942. The site features a protective red brick wall, a concrete floor pad that served as the foundation for a now-demolished wooden tower, and concrete pads that once supported the tower.
The structure is octagonal in shape, with the red brick wall constructed in English bond and capped with a soldier course and iron fixings. Located on a hillside at Rew Down above Ventnor Bay, the wall varies in height, reaching a maximum of approximately 2.25 meters and measuring 36 centimeters in width. The overall enclosure is about 5.4 meters wide. Seven sides of the wall include loop holes for small arms, with those on the north side positioned higher up. The eighth side, facing southeast, provides access to the interior.
Inside, the concrete floor pad features a gutter along the inner face of the brick wall. At the center of the pad is a recessed octagonal concrete platform, roughly 3.9 meters in diameter, with dwarf walls 15 centimeters wide and some remaining iron fixings. This platform was the foundation for the now-demolished wooden tower. A cable trench, 63 centimeters wide, runs through the center of the pad from west to east.
Surrounding the brick enclosure are seven concrete pads, each with one or two rectangular slots cut into them, which were used as bases for wooden struts that supported the tower.
