Description

Upper Watchingwell is a mid-18th century farmhouse that has been converted into a house. The front features mainly black brick headers with red brick detailing, while the other sides are made of brick or coursed stone rubble. It has a hipped tiled roof with a 20th-century central hipped dormer. The building is two storeys high with attics and a basement, and it has three windows. The windows are casements with cambered head linings, with the exception of the central window, which is a three-light design. There is a brick modillion cornice and a band between the floors. The central entrance has a doorcase with a flat wooden hood supported by brackets, leading to a six-panelled door and three stone steps. The left side of the house is made of coursed stone rubble with a deep plinth, possibly the remnant of an earlier structure. The right side is constructed of brick in English bond and has two windows. At the rear, there is a single-storey brick brewhouse on a stone plinth, featuring a brick chimney stack and a roof now covered in corrugated iron. The farmhouse was noted to be in existence by 1774, when it was valued as "A very good New built House with a Barn, 2 Stables, 2 Carthouses, a very good granary and a garden."
