Description
The Thorley War Memorial is a village memorial built around 1920, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Swithin in Thorley, Isle of Wight.
The memorial features a tall, rectangular base that is battered and currently covered with pebble-dash render, although it may have originally looked different. Above this base, there is a stepped section made of marble, which supports the marble cross. The cross has a tapered shaft and a wheel head.
The steps of the base are inscribed with the names of the fallen, while the tapered base of the cross has an inscription on its western side that reads: 'IN MEMORIAM / 1914 - 1919 / GOD IS LOVE'. The marble cross displays a Celtic pattern with a wheel head, featuring a raised, moulded edge and the Christogram 'IHS' entwined at its center.
