Description
Wroxall War Memorial is a monument commemorating the fallen of Wroxall. Designed by Frank Moorman of Ventnor, it was unveiled in October 1920, with a later addition and alteration around 1945.
The memorial is made of ashlar and is located to the south of the church. It features a stepped plinth, a square base, and an octagonal shaft that supports a lantern with four sides. The monument sits on a plinth of four steps leading up to the square base, which has inset rectangular panels. The western panel displays the words in raised Gothic script: 'A.MEMORIAL.TO / WROXALL.MEN / WHO.LAID.DOWN / THEIR.LIVES.IN.THE / GREAT.WAR.1914-19'. Below this, on a separate tablet angled on the top step, is the inscription '1939-1945' along with names of the fallen. The other three inset panels list the names of those who died in the First World War. The corners of the base are adorned with square finials that have flared tops. The octagonal shaft features a moulded base and an astragal at the neck, topped with a flared capital that supports the lantern, which has four closed sides and miniature gables. At the very top is a cross finial.
