Description
Hale Manor Farm is a house that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and brick dressings, and has a tiled roof with brick chimney stacks. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys. The west wing includes an end gable and a two-storey porch on the right side, which has a gable with coping and a kneeler, along with offset brick buttresses. There are three sash windows, two with 16 panes and one with 9 panes, along with French windows on the ground floor. A 20th-century conservatory is also present. The doorcase features a hood moulding.
The east wing is of a higher elevation and has a central brick chimney stack. It includes two 16-pane sash windows, and the ground floor has one 16-pane sash, an altered bay, and offset buttresses. The right side end wall has a stone ground floor and an English bond gable with vitrified headers, along with one blocked 17th-century window with a wooden surround.
Inside the west wing, there is a fine fireplace from the late 16th or early 17th century, featuring a four-centred arch, plain spandrels, and stops. The late 18th-century staircase is also noteworthy. The east wing has a similar early 17th-century fireplace, which is reputed to have come from Merston Manor. Originally, this building served as a manor house, though it was not listed as a Domesday manor, and it was in the possession of the Oglander family for many years.
