Description
This is a house, originally a farmhouse, with a south end dating to the 17th century and the remainder to the 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with red brick dressings to the 18th-century part. The roof is tiled and has two brick chimney stacks. The south gable features kneelers and a mullioned window: a three-light window to the second floor and five-light windows to the ground and first floors. A deep plinth runs around the base. The right-hand part of the lower elevation is two storeys and two windows high, with a plinth detail. A lean-to addition with a slate roof extends to the rear. The building was in existence by 1630, as documented in a survey of the Manor of Swainston & Brighstone, which details a parlour wing with a chimney, a parlour chamber with a chimney, a garret, and a cellar. There was also a hall with a chimney, a chamber with a chimney, two other rooms, six rooms above stairs (one with a chimney), a kitchen with a chimney, a milkhouse, a larder, a further room, and three rooms above those.
