Description

These are early 19th-century frontages applied to 17th and 18th-century houses at 3 to 5 St Thomas’s Square. The buildings are three storeys high. Number 3 is faced with painted brick, while numbers 4 and 5 have a decorative chequered brick pattern with red brick dressings. The roofs are hipped and covered with old tiles, featuring a wooden eaves cornice above an earlier brick cornice. Each building has two windows, with block sills. Numbers 3 and 4 are slightly recessed. The windows have flush wood frames. Number 5 retains its original sash windows with intact glazing bars, and features flat, rubbed brick arches above the windows. A modern shop front is present at number 3. Numbers 4 and 5 retain the frames of mid-19th century shop fronts, with number 5 possibly being earlier. Number 4 features plain Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Number 5 has reeded pilasters, a frieze and a cornice. The shop door at number 4 is made of six fielded panels with a rectangular fanlight above. The door at number 5 is recessed and consists of six fielded panels, set within a decorative wood case of thin strips and brackets extending up to the main cornice. Numbers 3 to 6 form a notable group.
