Description

The Statue of Sir John Cordy Burrows is a Grade II listed statue located in Brighton, erected in 1878 by the sculptor E.B. Stephens. It is made of white marble and stands on a granite plinth featuring a rusticated base and a square pedestal with a plinth and cornice. The statue depicts Sir John Cordy Burrows in mayoral robes. Burrows, who lived from 1813 to 1876, was a co-founder of the Royal Literary and Scientific Institution and served as Mayor of Brighton three times during the mid-Victorian period, earning the nickname 'King Cordy' due to his significant influence. Originally, the statue was situated at the southern end of the Pavilion Gardens until they were remodelled around 1984.
