Description

The Royal Sovereign Hotel is a terraced house that has been converted into a public house. It was built in the early 19th century, with a single-storey addition added to the south in the late 19th century. The exterior is finished in stucco, and the roof is made of slate.

The building stands three storeys tall over a basement and features a three-window range, with the original structure being double-fronted. There is a flat-arched entrance situated between Doric pilasters, topped with a modillion cornice that has been damaged. Full-height segmental bays flank the entrance, each containing tripartite windows; there is one central window on each floor, with the first-floor window being blind. The building is finished with a cornice and blocking course.

The single-storey wing to the south has a stepped, round-arched, three-bay arcade facing Preston Street, as well as a front section in Regent Mews. This arcade is formed by panelled pilasters that support archivolts connected by a springing band, with scrolling ornament filling the spandrels. The entrance is located in the right-hand bay, and there is a fascia supported by console brackets with triglyphs at either end, along with a cornice. The parapet features a central curved pediment flanked by scrolled consoles. The springing band continues into Regent Mews, linking two round-arched windows to the east. The original design of the sash windows is preserved on both the front and rear elevations of the early 19th-century building. The interior has not been inspected.
