Description

Numbers 11 and 12 Belgrave Place are a pair of terraced houses built around 1846 as part of a development by Thomas Cubitt. They are constructed of stucco with parapeted roofs. The houses are three storeys and an attic storey over a basement, each with a single window facing the street. All windows have flat arches. Steps lead to the entrances; a fanlight is above each entrance, and the entrance to Number 11 shares a landing with Number 10. The ground floor is treated as banded rustication. A continuous first-floor balcony runs along the front, supported by cast-iron brackets and railings. Number 11 features a first-floor canted bay with tripartite windows and a cornice. To the right of Number 12's entrance is a similar canted bay, also with tripartite windows. The sashes are of original design, with 2x2 panes in the central sashes and 1x1 panes at the sides, all with top and bottom margin lights. The first-floor and attic bay of Number 12 is slightly offset from the ground-floor bay, with a decorative cornice band between the first and second floors of the bay; the storey band that runs across the main facade does not extend over this bay. The second-floor and attic windows each have projecting sills. An entablature band and cornice define the attic storey. Basement windows have original 10x10 panes of glass. Original railings are present at the stairs and areas, and chimneys rise between the party walls. The interior was not inspected. Numbers 1 to 17 Belgrave Place form a significant group.
