Description

Numbers 2 to 24 and attached railings are a group of terraced houses built between 1845 and 1855 by Thomas Cubitt on his own land. The houses are constructed of stucco, with a roof hidden by a parapet.

The exterior presents three storeys and an attic over a half basement, with three windows to each house. Most houses share a common design, featuring a full-height, nearly full-width segmental bay. A flat-arched entrance, with an overlight within the left-hand arch of the bay, is accessed via stairs. Two windows are positioned to the right of the entrance. All windows are flat arched, with projecting sills; upper-floor windows have architraves. The ground floor is characterized by banded rustication. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a first-floor balcony with cast-iron rails and brackets, each topped by an entablature with three floral roundels in the frieze and supported by a pair of console brackets. The central window of the attic is blocked in most houses. There's a storey band between the second floor and the attic. A plain entablature band with a projecting cornice sits above.

Number 2 has an additional window range to the left of the bay, where a flat-arched entrance is framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature, with side and margin lights to the door and overlight. A similar Tuscan aedicule (a decorative architectural surround) surrounds the entrance of Number 24, which is on the return, flanked by a range of windows, the one nearest the corner being blocked. Number 24’s ground floor lacks rustication, and includes storey bands between the ground and first floors and between the second floor and the attic. The central window of the attic is unblocked in Numbers 4 and 18. Original 2 x 2 pane sashes remain to the attics of Numbers 2-6, 12-16, and 24, to the second floors of Numbers 2-6, 10-16, and 20-24, and 1 x 2 pane sashes to the first floors of Numbers 2, 14-16, and 22-24. Party wall stacks are present.

The interiors were not inspected. Railings are present to the stairs and areas. Numbers 2 to 24 form a group with Numbers 1 to 19.
