Description

Numbers 1 to 19 and attached railings are a terrace of houses built between 1845 and 1855 by Thomas Cubitt, who also owned the land. The houses are stucco with a roof hidden behind a blocking course.

The terrace consists of three storeys and an attic over a half basement, with three windows each. The design follows a typical pattern, featuring a full-height, nearly full-width segmental bay. A staircase leads to a flat-arched entrance with an overlight within the right-hand arc of the bay. On the ground floor, there are two windows set within a banded rustication. All windows are flat-arched with projecting sills; those on upper floors are also framed by architraves. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto first-floor balconies that have cast-iron railings. Each of these windows is topped by an entablature with a frieze of three floral roundels and a cornice supported by a pair of console brackets. A storey band is located between the second floor and the attic. The central attic window is blocked. A plain entablature band and projecting cornice are above.

Number 1 has an unblocked attic window. The overlight to Number 3 has margin lights. First-floor balconies at Numbers 1 and 5-7 are supported by cast-iron brackets. The entrance to Number 19 is on a return, and is flat-arched, set within an aedicule of Tuscan pilasters topped by an entablature. Rustication and the storey band between the second floor and the attic continue across the return. This section displays a two-window range, with the windows near the corner being blocked. The attic and second-floor windows have original 2x2 sashes, while the first-floor windows have original 1x3 sashes. Party wall stacks are present.

The interior was not inspected. Railings are present on the stairs and areas. Numbers 1 to 19 form a group with Numbers 2 to 24.
