Description
Numbers 155, 156, and 157 are a group of terraced houses, originally built around 1850 and later converted into flats. The houses are constructed of stucco, with a parapet obscuring the roof and a 20th-century roof addition of minimal architectural interest.
The three houses were designed as a unified composition, despite being originally built as separate units, with number 156 forming the central focus. The central unit projects slightly, emphasized by rusticated pilaster strips to the corners and end walls. A bracketed cornice with a shield frieze runs across the entire elevation and returns to Belgrave Place. The ground floor features chamfered rustication, creating a keystone lintel above the window heads and extending to the return elevation. All windows are flat arched, except where noted.
Continuous cast-iron railings are present on the balconies of the side units and on the verandah of the central unit, which has cast-iron stanchions and a concave metal roof. First-floor windows are round arched, featuring a continuous springing band and architraves only. The spandrels above these arches are ornamented with round shields. An entablature sits between the first and second floors; the end units have a Vitruvian scroll frieze, while the central unit has round shields. Second-floor windows are round arched, repeating the pattern of the first floor, but without ornamentation. Original sash windows remain; those in numbers 155 and 157 have margin lights, with sizes 4x4 and 6x6 on the ground floor, and 6x6 on the second floor of number 157.
The entrances to numbers 155 and 156 are flat arched with overlights, accessed by steps. The entrance to number 157 is on the return elevation and features steps leading to a flat-arched entrance with decorative glazing bars, topped by a prostyle porch comprising a pair of fluted Tuscan columns and responds. The porch has a balustrade above and a glassed-in verandah. A full-height segmental bay to the right has one window on each floor. Round-arched windows with architraves, supported by Tuscan pilasters, are located near the corner and rear of this return. Quoin strips are present on the corners and end walls of the first and second floors. The windows in this bay have sizes 3x3 on the ground floor, 8x8 on the first and second floors, and 3x6 in the attic. Further windows have sizes 4x4, 2x4, and 6x4, all with margin lights to their respective floors. Cast-iron balconies are present on most first-floor windows.
The interior has not been inspected. Railings are also present on the stairs and areas of the property.
