Description
The railings running along Marine Parade in Brighton were constructed in 1880, as indicated on some of the piers, although the last digit of the date is often unclear. These railings extend from the top of Duke's Mound at the eastern end to the main entrance of the Brighton Sea Life Centre at the western end. Some sections bear a maker's mark from J Every of Lewes, while others may have been produced by C Reed and Son of Brighton.
Made of cast iron and teak, the railings are typically composed of sections about 2 meters long, separated by cast-iron piers that feature rounded mouldings and a rounded head. Each section is divided into three panels, with the lower part displaying diagonal cross-pieces and a roundel at the center that carries municipal emblems. The upper part of each section features a circular upper rail made of teak.
At the eastern end, the railings begin with a squat pier decorated with panels, some of which display municipal emblems and the date, topped with an elaborate entablature and a gadrooned finial. Throughout the length of the railings, there are short recesses or bays facing the sea, located opposite various streets and places such as Chichester Place, Percival Terrace, and Marine Gardens. These recesses lead to steps or ramps down to Madeira Drive, which also feature railings of the same design.
The railings continue around Madeira Lift, although in a lighter and later design, which is also used for a set of steps down to the terrace opposite the end of Margaret Street. Near Madeira Place, the railings are interrupted by the lift to the Brighton Sea Life Centre, before resuming until they reach the main entrance of the Sea Life Centre.
