Description

Numbers 1-16 form a terrace of houses built between 1849 by Amon Henry Wilds, located on the west side of Park Crescent in Brighton. They represent the western two-storey range complementing the eastern range at numbers 33-48. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofs.

The exterior design is consistent, with each house featuring a design of entrance front facing Park Crescent Terrace: entrances are slightly set back and paired with the adjacent house, featuring flat-arched surrounds with moulded architraves, overlights and panelled doors of original design, with quoins marking the transition to the main facade. Windows are flat-arched with moulded architraves, and the central window on the first floor is often blank. The sashes are largely original, with 4/4 panes on the ground floor and 2/2 panes on the first floor. Console brackets support the eaves, which incorporate a frieze of wreaths. Cast-iron area railings with spearhead finials are present.

The garden front features two-storey wings with flat-arched windows, bracketed eaves with wreathed cornices, and hipped roofs. Tower bays, in some instances, have been altered on the ground and first floors, but retain similar eaves and cornice details, including pedimented gables. Many windows retain original sashes, some with margin lights. A low stucco garden wall is punctuated by panelled piers and iron railings.

Specific features distinguish individual houses. Number 1 has an entrance bay that isn't set back and a south-facing wing with banded and chamfered rustication on the ground floor, and no architraves over the ground-floor windows. The first-floor left-hand window is blank. The three-storey 'tower' at number 1 has flat-arched windows with moulded architraves to the ground and first floor, round-arched windows to the second floor, quoins, bracketed eaves, a stuccoed side stack facing Park Crescent Terrace, and a small, flat-arched window to the left of the entrance. Number 6 lacks a panelled door and has a tiled roof. Number 7 also lacks an original panelled door. Number 9 features a central first-floor window. Numbers 13 and 16 each have two pedimented dormers.

The interiors remain uninspected. The design is described as being unusual and distinctive.
