Description

Ovingdean Rectory is a detached house, built between 1804 and 1807. The east and north facades are faced with cobbles and brick dressings, now painted, while the south and west facades are of brick laid in English bond. It has rendered stacks, and a slate roof. The house is two storeys over a basement, with dormers, and originally had a four-window arrangement. A Doric porch with a pediment and panelled soffit provides access to a flat-arched entrance with a fanlight and an original panelled door. A single-storey canted bay is located to the left of the porch. Most windows are segmental-arched with sashes of their original design, with the exception of a first-floor window on the right-hand side. There are two dormers in the roof. The south front has two windows with slightly cambered arches, and three sashes of original design. A rendered side stack is also present. The north side features a single-bay section under a lean-to roof, connected to a wing with a rough cobbled finish, a pitched roof, and a brick stack. The rear or west elevation includes one horizontal sliding sash window, a cobbled outshut, and two side stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
