Description

A wellhouse, dating from circa 1735, now in a ruined state. Constructed of flint with brick dressings, the building has a rectangular plan, with a possible original stable extension to the east. Brick quoins are present. The west side features two four-centred arches in brick, while the north side originally had three, all of which are now blocked and likely rebuilt. The south side has been extensively repaired and largely obscured by ivy. A single low segmental arch exists on the east side. The well itself remains, surrounded by a low brick wall which supports the remnants of a 19th-century cast-iron winding mechanism. Carder’s Encyclopaedia of Brighton provides further information.
