Description
The water wheel in the grounds of The Grove is a 19th-century structure. It is a large wooden wheel with iron plates, believed to have operated Charrington's flour mill until the 1880s, after which the mill was demolished. The wheel was then attached to an electricity generating plant by order of Samuel Barrow, who owned The Grove from 1888. The wheel is protected by an open timber-framed structure with an ashlar casing at the base. This structure features a tall, steep hipped plain tile roof with gablets, cresting, and sunflower finials, along with stone blocks against the south side. To the north, there is a smaller structure that houses the electricity plant.
