Description
The Trumpeter's House is an important early 18th-century building located on the site of the Palace Middle Gate. It was constructed for Mr. Hill, the brother of Mrs. Masham. The main facade, which faces the garden, features two storeys and is 11 bays wide, highlighted by a central portico with a pediment supported by two pairs of Doric columns and a triglyph frieze. The rear of the house faces Old Palace Yard, is also two storeys high, and consists of 10 bays arranged in a 4:1:5 pattern, with the central bay projecting and the left-hand bays set back. The building is brick-faced and has a modillion eaves cornice. The central bay is gabled and finished with late 18th-century or early 19th-century stucco. The name "The Trumpeter's House" comes from two medieval figures of trumpeters that once stood at the entrance to Old Palace Yard.
