Description
Cross Deep is a large house, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. It is a three-storey building with five windows, constructed of brown brick with red brick detailing, including bands, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. Attached to the right and left are simpler, two-storey late 18th-century wings, and a lower, two-storey addition is on the left. The windows are in moulded frames and have "Gothick" arched heads to the ground and first floors; the central windows are blank, with a dummy window on the first floor. A prominent, Corinthian pilastered doorcase is centrally positioned on the ground floor. A good brick wall runs along the road, featuring square gate piers topped with stone pineapples, a wrought iron gate with an overthrow and a lamp. The rear, overlooking the river, features yellow brick, full-height splayed bays terminating the later side wings, framing a central section similar to the road front but without the "Gothick" glazing in the windows. The wings are attributed to Gibbs, and the garden cottage is built with Mathematical tiling. A riverside gazebo, featuring a pyramidal roof and bay window, is also present. The interior retains original features such as a staircase and doorways. A coach house adjoins the left side of the road frontage, projecting at the street end.
