Description
Ryan House is the surviving portion of a house formerly owned by Baroness Howe, with an earlier core dating to the early 19th century. The other half of the original house, known as Beechcroft, was destroyed by bombing. The building is now three storeys high, with a three-window front plus a splayed corner window. It is faced in stucco. A projecting porch features part-fluted piers. A two-storey wing adjoins the right side of the building. The garden front is lower because of the sloping ground towards the river. A full-height splayed bay is present, and the ground floor is rusticated in wood to resemble stone. Historical records note that Baroness Howe demolished the home of Alexander Pope in 1807 during the rebuilding of the mansion of which Ryan House was originally a part.
