Description

This parish hall was built in 1911 by Arthur Grove, and is now used as offices and small business units. It was originally constructed as the parish hall for the Church of St. John the Divine on Kew Road. The building is constructed of red brown and pale red brick laid in bands, with red brick and stone dressings, and has tile roofs. It is two storeys high with a basement.

The west elevation is symmetrical, with a central bay projecting slightly and highlighted by red brick. A lozenge-shaped vent in brick with stone dressings is in the gable, below which are smaller stone lozenges with a red brick cross. A central doorway is approached by stone steps and a bridge. The carved stone doorcase features an Art Nouveau-inspired floral arch, with inscriptions "ST JOHN'S PARISH HALL" on the imposts. The oak doors are panelled below and glazed above, with heavy chamfered glazing bars. An overlight has small rectangular panes. A central round-headed window with small panes sits above the doorway. Segmental headed timber mullion and transom windows with small panes are on both storeys, and basement Diocletian windows are present. The gate piers are made of stone and brick, with iron gates featuring an embellished lock. Railings with knob finials run to the bridge.

The south elevation has a south-west porch under a hipped tiled roof, with brick piers and a solid left return featuring a small paned window. A stone pier is dated 1911, and the lintel is formed of diagonally set tiles. The stair bay is of one and a half storeys with a gable to the road, and features a three-light casement with deep round-edged glazing bars and a pivot-hung round light above. A brick stack is also present.

The main hall has five unequal bays; three bays have four top-hung lights, and the outer bays have two lights. A continuous clerestory of lights runs along three bays. Windows are set diagonally at the angles of the hall and flanking wings, overlooking an angled arch to the east. A copper cupola with a timber bell stage is set on the main roof. A south-east wing features a round arched doorway with brick dressings and a small paned overlight. Tall brick piers have a stone band and chamfered cap. The rear hall is of plain red brick with tile roofs, and has timber mullion and transom windows. A rear door is under a brick arch, and a stair light is positioned above.

The interior of the hall has a scissor-braced roof and a gallery supported by octagonal oak piers with a rectangular grid balustrade. The Bridge Room contains a plaster overmantel inscribed "St. V 1911", with a floral frieze and a matching central ceiling vent. Cupboards flank the fireplace, and are located on the opposite wall. A ground floor room off the entrance lobby includes a fireplace with a mantel shelf and cupboards, with replaced tiles. A recessed handrail with a floral frieze runs along the main stair, and a rear stair has stick balusters with newels featuring tall knob finials. Some door and window furniture has been reused throughout.
