Description
Kew Palace is a Grade I listed building located in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. It was built in 1631 by Samuel Fortrey, a Flemish merchant, whose initials and those of his wife are displayed above the door. This square red brick mansion features Dutch gables, classical cornices, and classical Orders on the entrance front, all crafted in cut and moulded brickwork, topped with a pantile roof.
The building has three storeys and dormers, with the entrance facade being seven bays wide. The outer two bays on either side are slightly advanced, and there is a central entrance. The windows were replaced in the 18th century, and the entrance front was altered in the 19th century. The interior mainly dates from the 18th and early 19th centuries, with some earlier panelling still present.
Kew Palace served as a royal residence from 1754 until the death of Queen Charlotte in 1818. It was the home of Augusta, Princess of Wales, who arranged the garden during her widowhood. After her death, it became the residence of the Royal Princes. George III and Queen Charlotte lived here while waiting for the construction of the Wyatt Palace to be completed.
