Description

The lamp standards located at various points around the Royal Botanic Gardens date from the early 19th century and are made of cast iron, having been adapted for electricity. Each lamp standard features a square, tapering base that is horizontally furrowed, with a GIIIIR monogram on most, while the one at the north end of the Main Entrance railings has a WIIIIR monogram. The base supports an octagonal column that has three swan-neck brackets, each holding a round lantern topped with a pagoda design. The letters T.E.D.G.E. are cast into the base of each standard. These lamp standards can be found on the pavement in front of number 51, on the green opposite number 53, on the green opposite the main entrance gates to the Royal Botanic Gardens, at the south end of the railings to the main entrance, at the north end of the railings to the main entrance, and on the green between the Herbarium and the gates to the Royal Botanic Gardens.
